Mera Chowkidaar in Sector 31 Gurgaon

Imaging paying 200 rupees a month to the chowkidaar and finding him missing from his place at 3 am in the morning? That happened to me today. We went for a walk at around 2:45 am (DO NOT ASK the logic behind it!) and found the dude not on his regular position when we reached his area. What we found was an empty chair and a Hyundai Santro car parked besides his chair.

We missed that moment but returned with the camera. Bingo! He was there seated comfortably in his seat. I already hate to pay him 200 bucks for doing nothing considering he won’t be paying me money to buy a new bike in case my splendor gets stolen. And now I find him missing from his place at the height of the night!

Damn fool. Now, I have a feeling he collects tons of money from everyone around my house and has already bought a Santro. Don’t believe me? Here is a snapshot…

  1. Well, we have two night watchmen for our building- one of them is always sleeping (I think they take turns) and sometimes both are. However, you must realize that these guys are merely minor deterrants and witnesses or observers. If some armed thugh decides to rob an apartment - these guys will not be capable of doing anything to stop him. Maybe they will shout a bit and raise the alarm. But directly stop him - no.

Inspite of this - they serve a purpose and they have to make a living. What kind of life will this guy have with 200 rupees for an entire month? Will that even cover his food? Or are you paying 200 and that’s part of a contribution (from other people in the vicinity) - I sure hope so.

  3. 50 houses! You’re paying him too much! He will get used to the good life - I now notice the Pepsi bottle, maybe it’s filled with water now - but maybe he had a whole litre of Pepsi in the evening! And maybe that IS his car ;)

  5. Pay him more… 200 Rupees per month… Would you lose your sleep for 200 rupees? He needs atleast 15-25 houses to make a decent living, and considering the seriousness of the job.

So stop making fun of somebody’s job if you can’t pay. What if he gets injured stopping the crime or lose life doing that, what would you do? Would you pay him or his family so that they can cover their expenses all life?

If you realize that’s the problem, If you really want a strong (physical and mental) chaukidaar, pay him decent and respect his work.

  6. Yeah right. I would pay him more when he comes to me and TELLS me to start taking care of my bike parked inside my house coz he won’t be respobsible if it is stolen.
